The iPhone Goes Voip With Skype 2.0 over 3G

I remember when Skype was first released for iPhone. I was at breakfast with some friends, and we all were trying it out, only to realize that we could not make calls on 3G. This was of course a big disappointment, but we still found it pretty wild that we could call each other for free, even if it was just over Wifi.

As a person who worked for years in a large telecommunications company, I can share an inside secret with you.  A lot of these large corporations who depend on the mobile market, are all very concerned with the proliferation of VOIP technology. If you are not familiar, VOIP stands for Voice Over IP, or the ability to transfer your voice via the Web as opposed to land or cellular lines.
If the predictions are accurate, and VOIP is going to dominate the market over the next few years, this can drastically change the mobile market, as well as many other industries. For starters, this will lower prices, as VOIP calling is generally much more affordable than regular calling. Another consequence of the VOIP trend, which occurred to me recently, would be the reduction of the mobile radiation risks we hear so much about. The way radiation works is, the harder the phone has to work to communicate with the cell towers, the more radiation it emits. If phones only had to communicate with the internet and not cell towers, that would completely change the picture. Meanwhile, I use tawkon to avoid radiation from my BlackBerry. (hope it gets approved soon for iPhone too.)
When it comes to VOIP technology, the most well known name and the industry leader is Skype. Skype has the widest user base out of all the VOIP providers, and so when the iPhone app was announced, it was a big deal. However, as of  two days ago, Skype 2.0 is out and it now supports 3G. What this means is that you can now make calls from your iPhone to Skype for free from anywhere.
With the new iPhone 4.0 OS coming out next month, the ability to run Skype in the background means iPhone users are now able to be reached for free on their phones via Skype. I have not tried it out yet, but all initial reviews claim that the voice quality is very on par with regular calls.
As of now, Skype calling over 3G is free to Skype and available at the reduced Skype rates if you are calling a phone. As of the end of August, according to the app’s page on iTunes, there will be a small monthly fee for the service.
For the record, VOIP calling is available on other platforms as well with the Fring Android app and the Nimbuzz BlackBerry app.
The release of the new Skype for iPhone also offers some other new features or should I call them “enhancements”. These include faster startup time, fast access to the Skype dial pad from the phone’s home screen, and others.
We will wait to see what this service will cost, but whatever the case may be, the ability to use VOIP on your mobile phone whenever and wherever, is a definite step in the right direction, and one that might change this multi billion Dollar industry forever.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.5b4 to Jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 4

Redsn0w has just been updated to beta 4 to support the latest iPhone OS 4 Beta 4 firmware. iPhone OS 4 Beta 4 was released by Apple last week, which since Beta 2 has closed the jailbreak loophole used by Redsn0w 0.9.5b1 and b2 to jailbreak OS 4. But with this latest version of redsn0w, you should be able to jailbreak iPhone OS 4 again on iPhone 3G.
redsn0w 0.9.5b4
An excerpt from iPhone Dev-Team on this release is as follows.

This is a beta release of redsn0w targeted at developers of jailbroken apps. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days. Nothing new is revealed to Apple, and it’s not applicable to the iPad. Don’t go near it if you use yellowsn0w, ultrasn0w, or blacksn0w.
YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK. That’s because the beta redsn0w works only if your device has already been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta1/beta4 IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you’ve already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.
Instructions to jailbreak iPhone 3G on iPhone OS 4 Beta 4 using Redsn0w 0.9.5b4 are exactly similar to the last release. Please read all the instructions posted here carefully before upgrading your phone to iPhone OS 4 Beta.

More leaked images of iPhone 4G yet again!!!!!

Looks like we may see iPhone 4G leaks daily till the launch of it on June 7 at WWDC 2010.Yesterday we saw some leaked iPhone images with white surface and today there are even more iPhone 4G leaked images.

Schermata-2010-05-23-a-23.51.17
This time these images are not of a completely assembled iPhone but these images are showing close-ups of the steel structure which contains the main parts of the device. We wonder how begeek just managed to get the body of iPhone 4G without its parts. Anyways this is same as the previous leaks but one thing is to be noticed is that it has screw holes on the bottom of the piece.

Will Sprint Get The iPhone This Summer?

Since some months, we have been hearing rumors that iPhone will have Sprint as its carrier for iPhone after the launch of iPhone 4G.And today Mac Rumors has received unofficial words via jkontherun that Sprint could very possibly get iPhone 4G this summer.

SPRINT BRAND LOGO
We can’t believe every rumor but still we wish this one is true because it will definitely  increase the sales of iPhone and both Apple and Sprint will benefit from it. Having 4G Internet speed on the iPhone would totally blow the competition out of the water as well. Currently, the HTC Evo 4G is the only phone that take advantage of Sprint’s 4G network and having iPhone added to their portfolio, would definitely be something they would secretly be hoping for. James Kendrick mentioned that the source is reliable but still he said “totally unlikely to come true”.
In the “totally unlikely to come true” department, yesterday I was told that Sprint will be getting the iPhone this summer. You heard that right, while rumors have long pointed to Big Red getting the iPhone this year, never has it been mentioned that Sprint would be selling the iPhone. I can’t believe this is true, although the source has been reliable in the past and does work for Sprint.
Macrumors further mentioned that a Sprint related source mentioned that Sprint would get the iPhone this summer, most probably in September. Couple of months ago, TechUpdate post said that according to a Best Buy employee iPhone will be coming to Sprint.
Last week, the Sprint Chief Financial Officer was asked questions about the iPhone and he only said “we’d love to have it”. But still he denied about having any deal with Apple. WWDC is only a few days away and we will find out for sure if this rumors has any weight to it.

iPad Banned In Yankee's Stadium

If you are a baseball fan and planning to watch a match live in Yankee Stadium, you should not even think about bringing your iPad there. Well if you do bring you iPad their then you may end up going back home or going inside without your iPad.

iPad_not_alllowed in yankee-stadiumAccording to a report from Yahoo Sports, iPad is somehow included under the “no laptops” rule in the security policy of Yankee Stadium so you are not allowed to take your iPad there. That’s what Duk wrote in his report:
Actually, they won’t let anyone bring their cool new toy through the gates. I called over to the Yankees’ security department to confirm this story and was told that the ban is true. All iPads fall under the “no laptops” rule in its existing security policy and are not allowed at Yankee Stadium.
There are many things odd about this iPad ban. First of all, iPad is not a laptop . Secondly, a device like iPad is obviously safe and there’s no way it would damage anything in the stadium. Well, unless you hit someone in the head with it, then there are chances of blood and pain.
Still, if somebody asks why you need an iPad while watching the match. Here are a few answers: you can access great apps like ESPN iScore Baseball Scorekeeper app or you can use any other app if the match gets boring. And another reason could be that the stadium is at a long drive from your home and you need to access internet with your iPad 3G. You could also be a blogger like us and addicted to the Internet and writing blog posts on the spot.
We’ve got you covered with the reasons. You’re welcome.

Zuckerberg Promises Simpler Facebook Privacy Controls

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has promised Facebook will roll out "simpler" privacy controls in the coming weeks.
In an op-ed piece published in theWashington Post, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised the social networking site will offer simplified privacy control in the “coming weeks,” including an “easy way” to turn off all third-party services.
“Simply put, many of you thought our controls were too complex,” Zuckerberg wrote. “Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls; but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark.”
Zuckerberg’s promise comes as the social networking service is facing another firestorm of controversy over the accessibility of its users’ information. Barring privacy gaffes that expose chats and private account information—the most recent comes by way of unique user codes being sent along to advertisers—Facebook’s revamped privacy settings indeed offer a lot of granularity, but have been roundly criticized as being too complex for most people to manage meaningfully. For instance, Facebook’s privacy setting enable users to opt out of sharing personal data with other sites so they can personalize their content for particular users, but Facebook only enables users to opt out on a site-by-site basis. There’s no way for Facebook users to opt out of it entirely.
Lawmakers and regulators have been taking notice of Facebook’s struggles with privacy. Democratic senator Chuck Schumer has asked the Federal Trade Commission to regulate social networking sites and establish a set of guidelines for how they operate; legislation has also been introduced in the U.S. House that would require users explicitly approve any sharing of personal information from a social networking site each and every time it happens. Government regulators in Canada and Europe are also looking into how Facebook handles personal information.

HP’s Slate Getting Palm’s webOS?

lthough not unexpected, industry reports have HP's much-touted Slate computer dumping Windows 7 in favor of the newly-acquired webOS from Palm.

When Hewlett-Packard bought Palm last month for $1.2 billion, speculation turned not only to how Palm’s webOS might revolutionize HP’s smartphone business, but what the implications might be for HP’s much-touted but never-shipped touch-driven tablet computing devices…especially the HP Slate, which was given center-stage billing in the hands of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at the beginning of the year and repeatedly teased in doctored-up promotional materials from HP. Now, it seems, we have the answer: numerous industry sources are confirming the HP intends to drop Windows 7 from the HP Slate, replacing it with Palm’s webOS. The first public report appeared inDigiTimes, but other reports and sources close to HP also confirm a small number of details.
However, the changeover to Palm’s webOS means the HP Slate will land on the market even later, with some sources saying HP will be struggling to make the device available in time for the end-of-year holiday buying season.
Some reports have HP preparing to outline plans for the HP Slate when the company completes its acquisition of Palm, and eying an October launch for the HP Slate. (At that point, Apple’s iPad will have been on the market for a full six months.) HP still has not announced any significant technical information about the HP Slate device, including details like screen resolution, processor platform, or mobile capabilities. Some experts have speculated HP may table the Slate project entirely, opting to move forward with all new webOS-based tablet devices.
HP’s decision to drop Windows 7 on the HP Slate doesn’t surprise many people who have attempted to use Windows 7 via a touch-based interface: although Windows 7 includes support for touch input, Windows 7 is still designed for desktop computers rather than a multitouch capable portable device. Palm’s webOS, conversely, was designed from the ground up for touch-based interfaces and mobile use.

Metal Frame of Next iPhone 4G / HD in Pictures

This is now becoming a norm isn’t it? Some new pictures of the next iPhone are now floating around the web sphere, showing the metal frame which Apple has used to house the main interior components of this high profile gadget. This is basically that middle unibody piece which will have glass (or plastic) top on each side.

Motion Computing Announces Core i7 Craggy Tablets

Alright, so this is a bit weird, no one has done this before and it looks like Motion Computing will embed Intel’s Core i5 and i7 in tow of their new upcoming tablets. This is really good initiative and they are looking forward to change a few things by introducing the aforementioned processors into their C5v and F5v tablet computers.

These devices will also offer a 10.4-inch TFT Touchscreen Display, Intel’s vPro technology, a stylus, front facing camera and despite using such powerful processors it will go on for up to 4.5 hours, while the batteries can also be easily swaped for fully charged once. The Motion Computing C5v will be a tablet target towards medical professionals while the F5v is supposed to be the more consumer-oriented one. Finally, it looks like the tablet will be running Windows 7 but I am not sure which one.
Further details are not available for the moment but we may hear a lot more about it very soon.

The pen is mightier than the sword!

We have always heard that ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’ and this time its all but true in the real sense. We have always been fascinated by all those gadgets that various undercover secret agents used to have and how they would use them to get out of real bad situations when we felt that all is lost for him. Imagine those cool gadgets James Bond had. Yeah it’s that kind of stuff.
It’s called the Uzi Tactical Pen! It comes with, be ready, it comes with a DNA catcher!!! That sounds cool, doesn’t it? It’s got a razor sharp tactical DNA catcher crown. Well at the same time you can use it as a weapon to get out of tricky situations. Well you can use it in life threatening situations but certainly not on your boss. Made of aircraft aluminum, its not only light but very sturdy at the same time.
Other features include the pens ability to write upside down and also underwater. What more? You get a one year warranty as well. You can use any standard Parker and Fisher Space Pen refills. At a price of $19.99 I think its a good deal for gadget enthusiasts.

Google Android 3.0 ‘Gingerbread’ will arrive in Q4 2010

Google I/O 2010 was a big thing for the tech world as it had a lot to share about new the technologies which would be now used in web development. Google also officially announced the Android 2.2 Froyo which I believe is a really brilliant update.

Now that we officially know about the Android 2.2 Froyo, it seems that Google has some really special announcement for the end of this year. We all know that WebM is a video format and in their FAQ’s section of their website some new details of the Android 3.0 have been revealed. This is what it said;
When will other Google products support WebM and VP8?”
“WebM support in Android is expected in the Gingerbread release (currently planned for Q4, 2010). We expect many other Google products to adopt WebM and VP8 as they prioritize it with their other product requirements. Keep an eye on the WebM blog for announcements.”
Well, this totally gives us a rough date of when to expect the next Google Android build and I am very eager to take a look at it.

Android Blows to Window’s Mobile in Global Market

According to the first quarter data for mobile phone market share released by Gartner, Android has emerged victorious over Windows Mobile. Bear in mind the fact that we are talking about the market share at the global level, so this is a worthy achievement for Google.

Interestingly, Android and iPhone are the only mobile platform who have built on their first quarter showing for the year 2009, with each increasing their respective market share at an impressive rate.
These stats confirm what was expected previously, Windows Mobile is dying until and unless Windows Phone 7 can do something about it. It is safe to say that Microsoft will continue the down slide journey at-least for this year. Let us see if Microsoft can manage to come out of this hole as winners.
